Defending my islands. Should this yard be plowed under? Apparently yes, says another blogger.

Over at Garden Rant, right here, someone has opined about islands in front yards, you know, those roundish areas some of us create in lawns so we can plant shrubs, grasses, and other plants. Who knew this was in such poor taste? Not I. The real question is why I am bothered by a stranger's personal opinions. Maybe posting about it here will help me stop grumbling in my head.

That's ridiculous. You have plenty of grass and room to run in your yard. The last thing the world needs is *more* yard grass.

Your islands are exceptional. I think it's more about whats in them - the dyed unnatural-looking mulch, sad looking scrubby shrubs, misplaced trees and lack of imagination - none of which you seem to have.

Thank you friends and family for your support (which is, I'm sure, why I posted this picture in the first place). I admit to being so thin-skinned that when I read a blog post that criticizes a yard that looks anything like mine I get all huffy and puffy. What if someone took a picture of MY yard to use as an example of bad landscaping? Then I remembered.... yikes, I've posted pictures of other people's yards and made comments, and probably not all of them were generous comments. So there you go: I've grown intolerant of apparent intolerance but I'M intolerant too. Lesson learned.

The author of that particular post has gotten under my skin on several occasions. I wish there were a way to filter Garden Rant by who posts there.
