My sister (who knows a lot) figured out that the plant is a calendula. It was just a few Google stops away to find that my flower is a mutant, but one that others have seen. Here's one particularly good blog entry, with much better pictures than I've managed so far.

Some people call it a radio flower, but I'm not sure if that refers to the mutant only or to the plant in general. And I think it's actually in the marigold family. So many people hate marigolds. I find that slightly anti-plant. Although I hate those creepy weeping evergreens so I guess I should keep my mouth shut.
