Last year this boneset wildflower -- the big white-blooming behemoth at the top -- did very, very well. Too well, since it cast a large afternoon shadow that denied sun to a big chunk of my veggie garden. So I vowed to never let it grow that big again. I think I'll let it get to about 8 inches, prune it continuously, and see if it blooms.
Hard to believe that this huge shrub would grow again from this single little rootlet (not the right noun...stump? trunk?)
September 2010 (top), April 2011 (bottom).

It looks a little like silver lace vine, which is similarly vigorous. I got one from a gal who was tired of it engulfing her tiny front porch every year. This will be its second year, so we'll see if it takes off for me.
It looks viney because a cardinal creeper vine (Ipomoea sloteri) is winding all around and through the boneset shrub (weed, whatever). Cardinal creeper produces lovely small red flowers late in spring. I saves some seeds from last and have to find a way to use them. The vine will engulf anything it touches. Anyone who wants me to mail them some seeds should speak up.
"late in summer" I mean
And "I saveD some seeds from ...."
